Lost
Lost, confused and terrified. He woke up in the room he has
never seen before. The body was aching and it seemed like the pain would never end.
The head was ringing. He slowly reached for the head and felt the bandages.
Taking a minute to orientate himself, he realised where he was. Hospital? No,not
hospital. It was a house. He was wearing a robe, had a bandaged head and
bandages all over his body. He saw all this, now that he has gotten out of bed,he was inspecting himself in the mirror. “What the hell happened to me?”-was
his first thought."Where am I?".The room itself was bright from the light coming
out of the window. The room was covered in old dated wallpaper, covered in pictures of
strangers. Kids, elderly. “Who are these people? Why am I not in the
hospital?”.Thoughts kept rushing through his mind and piercing pain let itself
be known.” You gotta take it easy!”-he thought to himself. After sitting down
for a brief moment,Joseph was back on his feet. He approached the window in
this half empty room, to try and understand if he has been around here and where this
around,could possibly be.
The window was
dusty, aged and dirty. You could not make out much through it but certain things
were emerging from the distance. A diner. A diner in the distance. People were
coming in and out. The road was close by with cars going back and forth but, it
wasn’t that busy, isolated. This house was surrounded by the desert and mountains. He was
far away from the big city he last remembered. Who are these people? What do they
want? The questions kept coming up.Suddenly,voices. Voices were coming from
behind the door. Joseph slowly tip toed to the door and started to listen in.
He could not make out much of what was happening but he heard two women talking
about what seemed to be like him. They were discussing how long would it take for
him to wake up and what they should do when he does. Then, silence. Joseph
quickly jumped in bed in case someone comes in and pretended he was asleep or
unconscious or whatever was supposed to be happening to him. A young woman
walked in. She looked at him.No movement. Deep sleep. She walked away and closed
the door behind her. Joseph opened his eyes. He had to get out. He has never seen
this place or the people in the photos and he knows he lives in the big city.
The plan is to hitchhike to the nearest city and go to a hospital for a check
up,stay there and be safe. He got up. Approached the dirty, weathered window and tried to open it. It
was locked. Sealed shut. Age or on purpose it was not going to open without
some noise.
Joseph got the
pillow case off the pillow on his bed and wrapped it around his hand. Smash!!!
The glass of the window was now on the floor in pieces. He cleared the window
frame from the glass and started to crawl through. Suddenly, two women came
running in,screaming, crying. The younger woman was the one who walked earlier and the other
woman, he never saw but she was in the pictures on the walls. “Joseph!”-they
screamed.”Stop it!”.”Please!”.”Joseph?”-he looked at them confused. Was that his
name?He tried to remember but he doesn’t remember anything. Massive pain in the
head again. The two women pulled him back inside the house. He was kneeling on
the floor, trying to remember if Joseph was his name. Nothing. Nothing at all.
It was like trying to catch a dream. No matter how hard he would try to
remember his name, what has happened or anything, nothing would come up. Nothing was there.Just
blurs, flashes, fragments. He was struggling, trying to reach for them but it
was all in vain until he got to the point where it felt impossible. It felt
like his head was on fire and was about to crack in two. He screamed in
frustration while on the floor, screaming in pain.Women quickly helped him to
bed, lied him down. The older woman spoke:”Joseph!”.”That is your name, you have
been in an accident.” Her voice shook, trembling with sorrow and fear. There was
nothing. Joseph was a shadow of the struggling man he was a minute ago. He was
a shell trying to understand what he just heard. He lost who he was and
everyone but the man himself knew who he was. There were no emotions on his
face, nothing but blank face but inside he was screaming and shouting.
Fear,anger,confusion. What happens now?
